Trip to Trigrad, Bulgaria (near Greece) 2001
We went on a trip to some caves and canyons in the
Rhodope mountains bordering Greece. There were some interesting houses and villages along
the way. The road got progressively narrower as we traveled, until one truck took up the
whole road.
Near the top, the canyon became very narrow and there
was a short tunnel.
"Devil's Throat" was the name of a steep cave that
the canyon river tumbles through on the way from Trigrad. Here's Toni halfway up the flight
of stairs going up behind her. These stairs were on the side of the cave near where the
roof and the floor were close together, yet to the side was an immense open space. The
only time I've had claustrophobia and a fear of heights at the same time.
Not far away was another cave, a more traditional set of
caverns with stalactites, stalagmites and various other formations.
The road to the hotel was none too busy, (tell that
to the chickens) but the hotel itself was nice,
with a good view from our balcony of the town of Trigrad.
Street scenes in Trigrad. Some ladies were cooking
up quite a meal to celebrate a recently born baby boy. They insisted we have a little
of everything (they were cooking the sweets inside the house). Also in town was an
original Roman bridge.
Scenes from the south side of Trigrad. The old man
was cutting hay with a scythe, and the lady carrying herbs or fodder stopped for a quick chat.
