Winter, 2005-2006

Philip went with Rob to a CFC workday, where Tom helped him roll a big snowball down the steep hill at Steyermark Woods. Then he took a picture of Rob "holding up" a tree.

Next Rob takes a picture of Philip keeping the tree from falling.

In middle of January, after all the snow had long since melted, we were hit with a big snowstorm for all of six hours, dropping 13" of snow in Lake Zurich. It turned out to be my last chance for really enjoying the Subaru, and it handled admirably. Note that behind Philip, standing on the snowpile beside the mailbox, I hadn't yet shoveled the side of the driveway with the Subaru. It has 8" clearance, so when I drove out it left a trail in the foot-deep snow, but I was easily able to go through snowbanks probably 2 feet high left by the snowplow.

Philip enjoying the snow after the January snowstorm. Rob built a ramp at the top of the hill to help him get started, and there were some bumps along the way that could get him briefly airborne.

Philip at Pipestone, at the main falls. Pipestone, in SW Minnesota is where the Indians would quarry soft stone used for making peace pipes and other important objects.

Thanksgiving, 2005 (Ohio)

Our trip to Ohio, to visit great-aunt Ruth Bean (actually a double-cousin twice removed) and her extended family for her annual big shindig for Thanksgiving. Ruth is 96 years old this year, and always ready to tell a few stories or look at an old photo album.

The Thanksgiving Meal - people are filling their plates from the overloaded table as Dale prepares yet more turkey on the counter. Then everybody sits down for the big meal, with Rodney at the far end of the table.

The old farmhouse (built 1840) is in good shape and the surrounding countryside makes for a nice walk, despite a bitterly cold wind and sporadic snows that day. Philip finds the "sitting rock" that was used by Ruth and her mother (Philip's great-grandmother) when they would go out for their daily constitutional.

Fall, 2005

Philip always likes Halloween. Here he is as Skeletor (sp?) on the far left. He made his own drawings of gravestones, lightning, and a cracked scary house using glow-in-the-dark chalk.

We went to the Barnum & Bailey Circus during its annual trip to Chicago. We got there early for the pre-show, where we could go up to the rings for closer action. Rob was particularly impressed by the unicycle rider kicking bowls up on top of his head.

Philip "helped" rake leaves in the fall.

Maryland Trip, Sept. 2005

Rob went to Maryland on a business trip, and while there stopped in to visit with his Uncles Ken and Jerry. They showed him the important sites in the Baltimore/D.C. area, namely the gravesite of Dr. William Beanes in Upper Marlboro (read more about him here. And then a trip as the sun went down to the Bean Cemetary in what is now the NW suburbs of D.C. Here he is by a memorial to the first of our Beans in America, Walter Bayne, who came over probably in 1634.

Bulgaria Trip 2005

The 2005 trip to Bulgaria
is now online, click on the picture to see more of them (670KB). This is the "rakigenitsa" or Rakia-making house, in the small town of Izvor, near Plovdiv. It's a stone roofed house with a still inside, used by villagers to make their rakia (strong brandy-like drink).
