Summer 2004
Philip and Stoilko go to the Lincoln Park Zoo. Here they are at I believe the Lion
exhibit, where later a zoo worker was seriously mawled. Then Philip strikes a pose.
Philip riding a horse at the Wild West Town, near Union, IL. They also had a live show
of cops & robbers, here's Philip and Stoilko with most of the cast. Other activities included
panning for gold, shooting bow & arrow, and riding a narrow-gauge railroad.
Camping with Bulgarians (2004)
Camping at Blue Mounds State Park in Wisconsin, then took a trip to nearby Cave of the Mounds.
After that it rained for 18 hours straight! (And not lightly either).
Cave of the Mounds, Wisconsin. Looking at a rock
that glows after it's been exposed to a bright flash.
Memorial Day weekend (2004)
Grandpa, Philip and his 3 Neff cousins come running back (Philip and Kris leading) from the creek
ford at Beaver Creek State Park in SE Minnesota. Then Karla spots a toad in the fire ring. (We
didn't believe her at first since she had earlier mistaken a slug for a rattlesnake).
The kids go climbing on the rocks at the spring feeding Beaver Creek. L-R: Karla, Philip, Rob
and Kristen. Then Rob and Philip look back to Grandma.
Grandma does some scrambling over the rocks at the head of Beaver Creek. This part of Minnesota
is real steep and rocky, with shallow natural caves along the canyon walls.
Grandma and Grandpa go for a walk on the hillside above the campground.
Rob takes a turn with Grizzly the dog (English Terrier), on the walk on the hillside above the
campground.
Grandpa goes exploring on a steep hillside (70 degree slope, roughly), on the bluffs overlooking
the Mississippi River, on our (unsuccessful) quest for another geocache, but we did find a neat
sandstone cave. Story has it an early pioneer (1800's) stayed in this cave until he could build a house
in the area.
Spring/Summer, 2004
Philip's 'graduation' from Pre-K. He won the Math Wizard award. (Can add 20+20, count past 200,
etc.)
Philip and Rob went on a herpetology walk, and we were
the only ones to find snakes (still too cool). Here Philip shows the two snakes we found (he
carried them for quite awhile, and would have taken them home if we could). They're little
garter snakes, fairly common, mostly harmless.
We attended the show that Andrea, a Bulgarian friend's daughter, was in. This is a traditional
Bulgarian folk dance, one of several during a show put on at the Bulgarian Orthodox church
in Des Plaines, IL.
Philip practices some of his gymnastics. I don't think they taught him to fall backwards at
his classes though, he's been doing that (on purpose) since he could stand.
